With „Voodoo. Mounted by the Gods“ Gallery WestLicht presents a project by the Swiss reportage photographer Alberto Venzago which he has been working on for a number of years—documenting life in an African voodoo monastery.
In the year 1988, while travelling through the West African state of Benin, Venzago met Mahounon, an influential voodoo priest. From then on Venzago travelled at regular intervals to Benin over a period of ten years, led ever deeper into the mysterious world of African voodoo by Mahounon. He gained insight into secret rituals, and was allowed access to hidden places and sacred ceremonies witnessing Mahounon’s search for a spiritual heir.
