100 YEARS OF BURGENLAND
14.12.2021–20.02.2022
In 2021 Burgenland will celebrate 100 years of being part of Austria. To mark the occasion, WestLicht will present a photographic journey into its eventful history from the end of November. The exhibition is part of the official celebratory programme and one of the highlights of the anniversary year.
The exhibition was created in cooperation with Burgenland and the Burgenland Provincial Archives, which opened its collection to this extent for the first time for the exhibition. The historical photographs are complemented by selected contemporary positions, including works by Elfie Semotan and Andreas H. Bitesnich, photographers born in Mannersdorf an der Rabnitz, David Schermann, Peter Coeln & Francesca Catastini, Alex Lang and Florian Rainer.
For the exhibition, the curators have selected around 100 photographs from the more than 500,000 historical photographs in the holdings of the Landesarchiv. The pictures, some of which are touching, some funny and some bizarre, not only show everyday life in Burgenland over the last 100 years, characteristic landscapes or the defining events of the province's history. The photographs also reflect developments that reached far beyond the region.
