In the series of contemporary positions, WestLicht is showing the current series by the Austrian photographer Mafalda Rakoš (* 1994) in the upper gallery from 10 September, parallel to the World Press Photo exhibition: A Story to Tell. Or: Regarding Male Eating Disorders. In her long-term projects, Mafalda Rakoš expands the perspective of pictorial reportage by combining her photography with elements of collage, drawing, interviews, videos and writing, giving her protagonists a space to tell their own stories.
The theme of A Story to Tell is eating disorders, a clinical picture that is mainly associated with girls and women. The fact that men are also affected is hardly noticed in society. "You don't really belong to it ... You don't belong to the group of 'normal' people because you are anorexic. And you don't fit in with those who are anorexic because you are a man," says Thomas, one of the protagonists of the series.
For almost nine years, Mafalda Rakoš has been exploring the subject as an artist and anthropologist. A Story to Tell is the result of countless conversations she has had with eleven men affected by an eating disorder. In addition to portrait photographs in which the men pose in front of Rakoš's camera, these sessions also produced drawings in which they visualise their experiences. In the exhibition, Rakoš blends these elements together and supplements them with video excerpts from the interviews and quotes, thus allowing the viewers to participate in the conversations.
Mafalda Rakoš was born in Vienna in 1994. In addition to her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, she completed a degree in cultural and social anthropology. She then moved to the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where she now teaches. Her work has been nominated and awarded several times at international awards, exhibited in museums such as the Nederlands Fotomuseum, Rotterdam, Benaki Museum, Athens and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, as well as shown outside an art context at eating disorders congresses or at the AKH Vienna. Publications such as Die Zeit, Spiegel online or Dummy have published her images. Mafalda Rakoš lives and works between Vienna and Amsterdam, her third photo book A Story to Tell was published in 2020 by Verlag Fotohof.
