In the presence of Anna Boyiazis, award-winning photographer from Los Angeles, and Sanne Schim van der Loeff from the World Press Photo Foundation, Amsterdam, WestLicht opened the 17th World Press Photo exhibition since its inception. In front of a packed audience, author and ORF anchorman Tarek Leitner gave an impassioned opening speech on the importance of responsible journalism and against the spread of so-called alternative facts: "Reality is not a compromise."
