THE REFLECTED ME
SELF-PORTRAITS OF WOMEN ARTISTS IN THE MIRROR
Lecture by Christin Müller

Self-observation, self-invention, self-positioning - in the photographic self-portrait in the mirror, artists question their identity. The mirror offers a reflection surface for a silent dialogue with the self. How do I see myself and how do I want to be seen? What is my relationship to my surroundings and my camera? Beginning with the identity assurances of the 1920s, through unsparing documentary views, performative and constructive portraits, the lecture traverses the history of photography in the 20th and 21st centuries, showing Western and non-Western positions and taking a particular look at images by women artists.
Christin Müller is a cultural scientist and works as a freelance curator and author. From 2011 to 2013, she was a fellow in the Museum Curators of Photography programme. Since 2014, she has been an assistant to the collector Thomas Walther and has a teaching position at the University of Leipzig. Together with Florian Ebner, she was the artistic director of the Biennale for Contemporary Photography in 2017 and co-curates the exhibition series with/against the flow. Contemporary photographic interventions.
