LECTURE BY BÉNÉDICTE KURZEN AND SANNE DE WILDE / NOOR (AMSTERDAM)

On the 16th of October, Bénédicte Kurzen and Sanne de Wilde, members of the photographers' and journalists' collective NOOR, gave exciting insights into their work as photographers and into their project Land of Ibeji, which was awarded first prize in the portraits category at this year's World Press Photo Awards.
Land of Ibeji is a photographic project that explores the mythology of twins in Nigeria. West Africa, and in particular Yoruba land in southwestern Nigeria, has four times more twin births than any other region in the world. "Ibeji" means "double birth" and "the inseparable two" in Yoruba represents the ultimate harmony between two people. Through their particular visual language, the two photographers expand the view beyond externals - symmetry, similarity - to the twin as a mythical figure and powerful metaphor: for the duality within a human being and the duality that surrounds us.
