With World Press Photo 2023, WestLicht is bringing the most important exhibition of international press photography to Vienna for the 22nd time.
It is photographs like Evgeniy Maloletka's that make the incomprehensible comprehensible: This year's World Press Photo of the Year shows a heavily pregnant woman being rescued from the rubble of the Mariupol maternity hospital after a Russian missile attack. Iryna's son was born dead shortly afterwards. She gave him the name Miron - derived from the Ukrainian and Russian word for peace - before she also died a few minutes later.
The 120 award-winning images - selected from more than 60,000 entries by 3,752 photographers from 127 countries - not only reflect the dominant news topics of the past year, but also tell numerous stories that have hardly been reported on in this country: from the war in Ukraine to the consequences of climate change, the resistance of women against the Iranian regime, the situation of the LGBTQI+ community in the Philippines to the dazzling protagonists of the current hip hop scene in New York.
For the opening on 14 September, we are expecting the Spanish winner in the category Open Format Europe: César Dezfuli has followed the lives of the passengers of a refugee boat picked up off the Libyan coast in 2016 in his long-term project, thus transforming the often anonymous fates in daily reporting into personal biographies.
